African nation Rwanda's flag carrier RwandAir commenced its services from India with a direct flight from here to capital city Kigali.
Calling the east African nation a 'great friend' of India, vice president Hamid Ansari announced that a resident mission would be set up there in the coming weeks or months.
The Government approved signing of an Air Services Agreement (ASA) between India and Rwanda to allow the airlines of the two countries to operate services in each other's territory.
In a strategic boost to the bilateral relationship, India and Rwanda has signed three memorandum of understandings (MoU) for the promotion of innovation, easing visa requirements and boosting air connectivity between the two nations.
Vice-President Hamid Ansari is set to embark on a five-day visit to Rwanda and Uganda, in a bid to strengthen ties with the African countries. Ansari will visit Rwanda from February 19 to 21 and Uganda from February 21 to 23. He will be accompanied on the trip by Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla, four MPs, senior officials and a business and media delegation.
